Ambrosia Maple is a general term attached to a variety of Acer (true maple). A species whose boards include colorful bug “trails” caused by a fungus carried by the Ambrosia Beetle. This fungus penetrates the tree sap as the beetle eats into the tree, and it spreads both through the worm hole and up and down in the tree (carried along by the sap) and causes discoloring of the wood in streaks.
A burl or burr is a tree growth in which the grain has grown in a deformed manner. It is commonly found in the form of a rounded outgrowth on a tree trunk or branch that is filled with small knots from dormant buds. Burl formation is typically a result of some form of stress such as an injury or a viral or fungal infection.
Curly maple, also known as flame maple or tiger maple, is not a distinct species but a term describing a unique figure in the wood. Characterized by undulating bands that run perpendicular to the grain. This effect creates a wavy , three dimensional appearance, making it highly valued for its aesthetic qualities in furniture and musical instruments. Also great for Bowls!
Bark pockets are patches or inclusions of bark partially or fully embedded in the wood of a tree. Bark pockets are considered a nuisance in the lumber industry because they are considered a defect, and lower the grade of the wood. I , on the other hand, seek out this wood for its natural beauty.

I don't actually know the name of this form of ash, so I made one up. Flamin Ash. Very similar in appearance to ambrosia maple. Unlike the ambrosia maple, there are no wormholes . It is a mystery to me how is is formed. I suspect minerals in the ground help create the patterns. The challenge in making a bowl lies in strategically measuring and cutting the log to reveal this pattern within the SprungWood bowl. This precise approach highlights the desirable aspects of the wood's character.
Live edge wood showcases the natural, untouched edge of the tree, retaining the bark or a portion of the original shape, creating a rustic and organic aesthetic. Many SprungWood pieces feature a Live Edge. Working with the bark still attached can be very challenging. Extra processes have to take place to be sure the bark will not fall off after the wood dries.
Spalting is any form of wood coloration caused by fungi. Although primarily found in dead trees, spalting can also occur in living trees under stress. Although spalting can cause weight loss and strength loss in the wood, the unique coloration and patterns of spalted wood are sought by woodworkers.
Bird's eye is a type of figure that occurs within several kinds of wood, most notably hard maple. It has a distinctive pattern that resembles tiny, swirling eyes disrupting the smooth lines of grain. It is somewhat reminiscent of a burl, but it is quite different: the small knots that make the burl are missing. It is not known what causes the phenomenon.
